Thursday, May 4, 2017--Percha Dam State Park, NM to La Quinta, Gallup, NM--297 miles

It was easy to get up at 6:45 this morning, as yesterday the same time was 7:45. We had our instant oatmeal/yogurt breakfast and took a walk through the campground with Sofie.
There were two Mottled Ducks out on the Rio Grande. The river seemed a bit muddier today

A Summer Tanager posed briefly and we saw our first Robins since we entered Texas a few weeks ago.

As we left the campground, we passed a large field of onions--New Mexico Sweets?
Colorful farm workers were planting the next field.

It was a beautiful morning, and had a little crispness in the air.     New Mexico likes colorful highway bridges.

We visited a nearby State Park. Desert flowers were abundant

We headed north again, stopping at a grocery store in Truth or Consequences, NM to restock our refrigerator. It was a bit like shopping in a foreign country--smaller store, shelves over-flowing with items we did not recognize, but very friendly.

We also ran into quite a bit of road work and delays today. The right lane had been taken out completely! While most of the rocks were tan or red in one place black volcanic rocks were evident.

We took the exit for our planned night's camping at Bluewater State Park, but there was a large cloud of ominous smoke coming from the area. We decided we did not want to go there, and no other campgrounds within 50 miles. So we hightailed it to La Quinta in Gallup, New Mexico--our first night out of the van in 5 weeks!
Sofie was so excited when she saw we were staying in a motel, she could hardly wait to get to our room. We are enjoying it, too! Now we have to figure our route from here--always west and north.
Today Our Eyes Were On

Fewer birds and more flowers

A greener New Mexico  than we expected and it was a beautiful drive

Lots of red rocks to entertain our eyes
